Finding words and actions can be challenging for students practicing the expression of kindness toward others. The Crayola Colors of Kindness® products are printed with thoughtful kindness phrases that students can read for inspiration and pass on to those around them. By designing Kindness Cards, stored in a decorated envelope, students are always ready to spread kindness at school, home and in the community.
Objectives
- Expand vocabulary to express kindness by reading the Colors of Kindness drawing media.
- Select phrases and colors to create Kindness Cards and storage envelope.
- Design 12 Kindness Cards and storage envelope with Colors of Kindness drawing media.
- Seek opportunities to share the Kindness Cards with others.

Sax® Sulphite Drawing Paper, 90 lb, 9 x 12 Inches, Extra-White, 500 Sheets

Instructions

Discuss the concept of Acts of Kindness. Ask your students about times they have been kind to others and how others have been kind to them. How did it feel?

Explain to students that they will be designing 12 Kindness Cards and an envelope to keep them handy.

Show students the Colors of Kindness crayons, colored pencils and markers indicating the written kindness phrases on the sides of the drawing media. Read the phrases to or with the students and discuss what the phrases may mean to them.

Give students at least 2 pieces of precut white drawing paper, 9” x 9” square. Demonstrate how to fold the square paper into an envelope shape.

Instruct students to decorate their envelopes with the Colors of Kindness and kindness words to get familiar with the new colors.

Give students a 9” x 12” white drawing paper and demonstrate how to fold the paper into 12 equal sections. Fold the 9” side into 3 sections. Each section will be 3” wide. Press the folds firmly. Open out the folds so the paper is again 9” x 12”. Turn the paper so that the 12” side is in front of student. Fold the paper in half, left to right, matching the ends of the paper and pressing the fold firmly down. Fold it again left to right, matching the ends and pressing the fold firmly. Students will have 12 equal squares of 3” x 3” each to design their Kindness Cards.

Students may choose to cut the 12 Kindness Cards apart to design them or may choose to leave all 12 cards intact.

Reread the Colors of Kindness phrases to inspire students. Their cards can be designed with colors, phrases, and other words they would like to use to express kindness. The cards can be designed with specific people or situations in mind, or more general ideas that can be used for various sharing opportunities.

When students have completed all 12 Kindness Cards, discuss and encourage the students to show their cards to the class.

Encourage the students to take their Kindness Cards with them in their envelopes and keep them in a place such as their pocket or bookbag to easily access the Kindness Cards to give to others at school, at home or in the community in the future.

At the start of next class, discuss with students how they have used their Kindness Cards since the last class. Encourage them to create more cards in the future to continue sharing kindness with others.
