Delta Science Modules Food Chains and Webs Complete Kit, Edition 3, Grades 3 to 4
Description
Comprehensive, affordable and effective, Delta Science Modules Edition 3 (DSM-3) Kits provide an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to teaching a specific science topic through the use of activities and investigative equipment. In the Delta Science Modules Food Chains and Webs Complete Kit, your class will come to find out that every bite we take connects us to a complex network known as a food web. Because most food webs begin with plants, students will first explore plants as food producers. They will experiment with soil and light to find the best growing conditions, and plant ryegrass in terrariums. Then, students will introduce crickets, earthworms, and anoles to the terrariu, and watch what happens. Students will soon able to classify each animal as a primary, secondary, or tertiary consumer, or decomposer, based on what it eats. For reinforcement, students will role-play various predators and prey in a food chain game. By the end of the unit, students will be able to apply their knowledge of specific plant and animal relationships to the understanding of food webs in nature. If needed, there is a replacement prepaid Food Chains and Webs Living Material Card (sold separately; Item # 270-3447).
Along with the kit activities, the Food Chains and Webs Delta Science Reader (and complementary Skillbuilders booklet that helps students practice reading/grammar/writing/vocabulary skills with the content from the Delta Science Reader) will get students to read more about what an ecosystem is, how living things in an ecosystem get energy, and how ecosystems can change. Students will explore the interaction of living things and discuss food chains and webs through text and illustrations. The book also presents biographical sketches of key scientists, Charles Darwin and Rachel Carson, and describes the work of an ecologist. In conclusion, students will also discover the relationship between moose and wolf populations on Isle Royale and consider the varied ecosystems on a mountain.
Delta Science Modules Edition 3 (DSM-3) consist of a total of 59 assorted kits ranging from Grade K to 8 levels, each with a step-by-step teacher guide, student readers, 12-14 interconnected activities, and enough equipment to serve up to 32 students.
