Description When minerals are heated, they emit wavelengths of visible light. Since each mineral gives off wavelengths that are unique, this information can be used to identify their composition. In this investigation, your students will determine the chemical composition of minerals by observing their characteristic light spectra. Then they’ll identify the chemicals present and, in the process, learn how chemicals create color in a solid material.
